Just a few days ago Obsidian Entertainment officially released Pentiment on the worldwide market , a new graphic adventure set in the Middle Ages that fully convinced us, as we told you in our dedicated review .
An atypical game like Pentiment was only made possible thanks to Xbox Game Pass
And before we get into the specifics of this discussion, there has been a lot of discussion on the web over the last few months about the types of games that subscription services like Xbox Game Pass can encourage or incentivize, essentially allowing various development teams to experience much more compared to the past since they don't have the fixed dot of having to reach a certain type of sales to make the game profitable .
And precisely in this sense, in an interview with Rob Zacny on Waypoint Radio this Tuesday, Josh Sawyer of Obsidian Entertainment stated that Pentiment exists only thanks to Xbox Game Pass , precisely for the reasons we told you about a little above in this article.
Here are the director's statements:
“What I can tell you is that I would never have proposed making Pentiment without Game Pass. Yes, I literally would not have. I just don't think it would have been possible without that kind of subscription service.
Indeed, the old mentality of publishers and developers is generally focused on bigger investments with a higher ROI (return on investment), but with subscription services that is not the point, that element is not fundamental in this ecosystem.
Xbox Game Pass is the only place where Pentiment is possible to make. For my sake, making such a different game completely changed my thinking. It's so unusual, so niche, it's for a small audience, and as long as that audience is interested, it's fine.”
