Id Software is promising to bring back classic gameplay in the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages , while addressing some of the shortcomings of the last game. The upcoming installment will feature cutting-edge technology, including the use of ray tracing “in a way no one has ever done before.”
Engine technology director Billy Hahn emphasizes that ray tracing in Doom: The Dark Ages will be used to enhance gameplay beyond current standards, including accurate hit detection, which was previously nearly impossible without the technology. The game will be able to accurately detect bullets hitting enemy mech or armor, as well as differentiate between a variety of textures, materials, and surfaces.
