Just over a month after Assassin's Creed Shadows' release, the number of active players on the Steam platform has dropped by more than 90 percent.
According to SteamDB, the game's peak concurrent player count over the last 24 hours was just 7,704. By comparison, the game peaked at 64,825 online players on March 23 — just three days after launch. That's a sharp drop in interest for a game that was set to be one of the biggest gaming events of 2025.
The decline is not only noticeable on the PC platform. In the popularity charts for PlayStation 5 and 4 consoles, prepared by TrueTrophies, the game has dropped to 19th place out of 40 most popular titles. A similar trend can be observed on Xbox, where the game is in 22nd place, according to the website TrueAchievements.
Despite the drop in player engagement, Ubisoft has no reason to be ashamed, or so they claim. Back in March, the company announced that Assassin's Creed Shadows had surpassed 3 million players. It also posted the second-highest first-day sales in the series' history and became the biggest digital debut in PlayStation Store history.
However, as analysts and industry media point out, player counts do not directly translate to profits and do not give a full picture of the state of a game, as the number of copies sold can be much lower, something Ubisoft does not want to brag about.
